Electrum doesn't open ("daemon already running")

In the past 10 days, we received 5 WhisperBack reports from different computers for the same issue: endless spinner when (re?)opening Electrum:

Jan 20 02:20:51 amnesia electrum.desktop[16491]: Run 'electrum stop' to stop the daemon.

Seeing the frequency and variety of hardware, there might be something to investigate.
