restarting wayland

My graphics driver crashes periodically but that causes Wayland and Gnome shell to crash with it. The only "solution" I have other than rebooting to get any kind of graphics back is to install xorg and then run it, but I don't want to be running Xorg.

I know that it is not an officially supported thing, but how would I restart Gnome shell with Wayland? "systemctl start gdm3" does not work. I don't mind losing the session.
