Suggestion: Disable Thumbnails by default in the File browser
I plugged in a flash drive with many video and image files in the root folder while booted to Tails. Opening the drive in the File browser caused my laptop's fans to spin up as Tails rendered all the thumbnails. This is what prompted me to post this request.
Gains:
- Tails is designed to be run from a flash drive, and all unnecessary I/O eats into transfer speeds for more important I/O activity.
- Tails already eats through laptop batteries quickly because of (understandable) lack of energy saving tuning - thumbnail creation is an unnecessary power drain.
- Rendering thumbnails for every image, pdf and video file can be a privacy risk if using Tails in public e.g. cafe, exposing content to rubberneckers.
- Not sure about this one so placing it last, but rendering of thumbnails might be a vector for an exploit so probably best to disable by default.
Negatives:
- Might make it harder to identify files quickly, especially images.
