number of reports I think that, if that’s the case, an entry in the nown

This is nothing overly important, but its something very annoying when
you try to use Tails with multiple monitors.
Every time you boot Tails, you first have to go into the settings, drag
your monitors around so that they fit together correctly (so that moving
the mouse out of the screen on the left side doesn’t make it appear on
the monitor thats on the right from the current screen).
Also, the setting for which monitor is the primary one has to be
adjusted, because Tails likes to pick the wrong one all the time.
Tails should remember these settings so that its not needed to readjust
these every time you boot Tails.
It should be possible that this would be saved on some non-encrypted
persistent volume so that the Tails Greeter already can appear on the
correct monitor, which it wouldn’t if the setting could only be read
after you entered the password for the encrypted persistent volume.
Ideally it should be configurable somewhere where this is saved, so that
everyone can choose if he maybe doesn’t like the monitor configuration
of the PC where Tails was last started on to be stored unencrypted on
the USB stick, or if the better usability is worth it. I personally
don’t see an issue with it being known on what PC the Tails on some
USB stick was last used with.
I guess its way easier to just store it on the encrypted persistent
volume, and that would be completely fine of course, usually doesn’t
hurt to see the Tails Greeter on the wrong monitor.
There are configurations though where it does indeed hurt to have the
Greeter always appear on the wrong monitor: If you have monitors
connected that are not powered on, and Tails decides to always consider
that the primary one, you first have to power those on or disconnect
them from the PC to be able to start Tails. And you have to do that
every time you start Tails. Having the monitor config stored
non-encrypted so that the Greeter already knows about it would be a huge
usability boost for those configurations.

I understand that “Greeter” comes from the backend technology from

The current Known Issues page

sometimes outdated and a bit contradictory (Most tested PNY drives in my
experience work, as do the Sandisk Cruzer Glides). Although that page
still has its use, in my experience with trainings, most organizations
are looking to purchase hardware for a specific operation that involves
Tails, and they just need to know very quickly which laptops and USB

The closest thing to documentation on backing up a Tails persistent
volume (that I have been able to find) is [Manually copying your
persistent data to a new USB
stick](https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/persistence/copy).
Following these instructions results in the creation of a bootable
backup of a Tails drive with a persistent volume.
While effective, there are a couple of “gotcha’s” in this document that
can lead to confusing outcomes:
- In **Create a new USB stick**, Step 3 says to “Enable again on this
new USB stick the persistence features of your choice.” Some users
may not remember or understand which persistence features they have
enabled, and may be confused as to what to do at this step. If they
forget to enable a persistence feature on the backup, the
corresponding data will not be backed up after following the
subsequent instructions.
- Manually copying the files with Nautilus and confusing and
error-prone:
- If a user has all of the persistence features enabled, they may
try to select all or drag-and-drop everything from
`/media/amensia/TailsData/` into
`/live/persistence/TailsData_unlocked`. Nautilus does not
preserve file ownership and permissions when copying, so if they
accidentally copy one of the files owned by the
`tails-persistence-setup` user (e.g. `persistence.conf` or
`live-additional-software.conf`), it will end up owned by the
incorrect user on the backup drive, which prevents the
Persistent folders from being symlinked correctly due to the
permissions checks documented in the **Security** section of the
[Tails persistence design
document](https://tails.boum.org/contribute/design/persistence).
- I believe this is the root cause of bug reports where users
report that the “persistent volume has disappeared, but I’m
still prompted for password when booting Tails,” e.g. in
this [r/tails
thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/tails/comments/23ai1r/persistent_volume_has_disappeared_but_im_still/).
- Nautilus prints numerous obscure warning messages to the **Root
Terminal**, which undermines user confidence.
- Asking users to click through various warning dialogs from
Nautilus about merging/replacing/skipping files also undermines
user confidence (“did I actually back up all of my important
data?”).
- There is no documented “restore” process that explains how users can
recover their persistent data from the bootable backup created from
this documentation.
I’ve been trying to develop a process for reliably backing up and
restoring Tails persistent volumes, and I have a proposed modification
to this document that I think might fix all of these issues:
- Retain the **Create a new USB stick** section, but modify Step 3 to
say it doesn’t matter which persistence features you enable on the
backup (read on to understand why).
- Retain the **Mount the old persistent volume** section without
changes.
- In the **Copy your old files to the new persistent volume** section,
replace steps 2-11 with a single command, run in the **Root
Terminal**: `rsync -avh /media/amnesia/TailsData/
/live/persistence/TailsData_unlocked/`.
There are several benefits to this change:
- `rsync -a` will retain the ownership and permissions of the copied
files. That allows us to copy `persistence.conf` without creating
ownership issues that will bork the symlinking of persistent
directories on the backup drive.
- Since we are copying `persistence.conf`, there is no need for
the user to manually configure the persistent settings on the
destination to match the source, since the enabled persistent
settings are completely described in `persistence.conf`.
- `rsync -v` prints the files that are copied, which allows a cautious
user to audit the backup and ensure that their important data was
indeed copied to the backup volume.
- In my testing, `rsync` does not print any confusing error or warning
messages, unlike Nautilus.
- It requires a user to use the CLI, which it seems the original
document may have been trying to avoid, but was also unable to
prevent: CLI interaction is required to launch Nautilus in Step 2,
and then again to fix permissions in Step 11. This changes replaces
two CLI interactions with one, which seems preferable in my view.
- Dramatically simplifies the **Copy your old files** section,
reducing it from 11 separate steps to just 2.
- The restoration step, which is currently not documented at all, is
trivial: just `rsync` with `source` and `dest` swapped.
- Users can efficiently update their backups by repeating the steps in
the **Rescue your files from the old Tails USB stick** section,
adding the `--delete` flag to the invocation of `rsync`.
I am happy to contribute these changes, but first want to make sure they
are viable. Would the Tails maintainers, especially those who have a
deeper understanding of the Persistence feature than I, welcome this
change? Are there any potential gotchas with my proposal that I’ve
failed to recognize? As always, I appreciate your time and
consideration.

Since our new instructions site we have a problem in frontdesk, as we
cannot link now to the different sections of the install documentation.
One example is the troubleshooting section. It is not possible to point
the users to it, and many times we need to go through all the steps to
copy the content.

the only Tails releases that do start completely are Tails 2.12 (kernel:

- Change the layout of the USB stick in a way that’s incompatible with
the previous layout (maybe as part of tails/tails#11679).
This also relates to backups (tails/tails#5301).
As part of some research I did for tails/tails#12706, I drafted what steps it
would take to do such a migrate, both:
- A. To a new USB stick (“I was stuck with a smallish USB stick, now
they are cheaper and it’s a good time to change.”).
- B. On the same USB stick (“I bought a very big and fancy USB stick
for my Tails and want to make the most out of it\!”).
The copy of the content of the persistence itself could be based on
/doc/first\_steps/persistence/copy, though it has a few issues and
relies on the command line for everybody.
We should advertise A as slightly easier than B (one copy of persistent
files instead of two).
1. Proactive users
These are the steps for people who might have to do this migration
outside of a manual upgrade process.
- A. Buy a new and bigger USB stick
- 1\. Clone old on new
- 2\. Restart on new
- 3\. Configure persistence on new
- 4\. Restart on new
- 5\. Rescue files from old (fix perms on the terminal)
<!-- end list -->
- B. Extend the system partition on the same USB stick
- 1\. Clone old on intermediary
- 2\. Restart on intermediary
- Intermediary must have enough space for all persistent
data\!
- 3\. Configure persistence on intermediary
- 4\. Restart on intermediary
- 5\. Copy files to intermediary
- 6\. Clone intermediary on old
- 7\. Restart on old
- 8\. Configure persistence on old
- 9\. Restart on old
- 10\. Rescue files from intermediary (fix perms on the terminal)
<!-- end list -->
1. Reactive users
These are the steps for people who might be doing such a migration as
part of a manual upgrade. Tails Installer could detect that the
destination USB stick has an old layout and advertise the migration
during step #6 of /upgrade/tails (“Upgrade by cloning”). Actually,
before people do the actual upgrade and replace it with:
- A. Buy a new and bigger USB stick (the same as for “proactive”
actually…)
- 1\. Clone intermediary on new
- 2\. Restart on new
- 3\. Configure persistence on new
- 4\. Restart on new
- 5\. Copy files to new (fix perms on the terminal)
<!-- end list -->
- B. Extend the system partition on the same USB stick (pretty much
the same as for “proactive” starting on step 3)
- 3\. Configure persistence on intermediary
- Intermediary must have enough space for all persistent
data\!
- 4\. Restart on intermediary
- 5\. Copy files to intermediary
- 6\. Clone intermediary on old
- 7\. Restart on old
- 8\. Configure persistence on old
- 9\. Restart on old
- 10\. Rescue files from intermediary (fix perms on the terminal)
I don’t think it’s realistic to have detailed instructions for all this
but it would be good to explain the workflow of each scenario. To make
things a bit simpler we could try to have both the “proactive” and
“reactive” scenarios on a single page (“/upgrade/system\_partition”?
“/upgrade/migrate”?) and point /upgrade/tails to them.
We should also take into account what people doing /upgrade/clone would
experience.

- at least NVIDIA GTX 1080, but most likely all
[Pascal](https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/#nv130familypascal)
GPUs
- at least HTC Vive headset, and perhaps more HDMI devices
More generally, various reports tell us that a number of problems with
nouveau drivers for NVIDIA graphics can be workaround’ed by unplugging
non-essential devices connected to the NVIDIA thing (e.g. 2nd display,
sound outputs etc.) or by plugging displays on a different port.
It might be worth pointing to
<https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/> (so users can identify
their hardware) and
<https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/> (so that users can
tell whether the issue they’re experiencing is Tails-specific or not).

GnuPG verification of Tails download output differs from that quoted
here:
<https://tails.boum.org/install/expert/usb/index.en.html#download-verify>
With GnuPG version: 1.4.20 on Ubuntu 16.04 the command: \`gpg
—keyid-format 0xlong —verify tails-amd64-3.1.iso.sig
tails-amd64-3.1.iso\` outputs:
gpg: Signature made Wed 09 Aug 2017 01:06:36 IST
gpg: using RSA key 0xAF292B44A0EDAA41
gpg: Good signature from "Tails developers (offline long-term identity key) <tails@boum.org>"
gpg: aka "Tails developers <tails@boum.org>"
The instructions on the Tails site state that the output of this command
should be the following:
gpg: Signature made Wed Aug 9 02:06:36 2017 CEST
gpg: using RSA key 79192EE220449071F589AC00AF292B44A0EDAA41
gpg: Good signature from "Tails developers (offline long-term identity key) <tails@boum.org>" [full]
gpg: aka "Tails developers <tails@boum.org>" [full]
Primary key fingerprint: A490 D0F4 D311 A415 3E2B B7CA DBB8 02B2 58AC D84F
Subkey fingerprint: 7919 2EE2 2044 9071 F589 AC00 AF29 2B44 A0ED AA41
The instructions specifically ask the user to verify that the date of
the signature is the same.
There are three differences between actual and expected output:
1. Timezone
2. RSA Key
3. Key
fingerprint
## Potential Fixes
Running the command \`gpg —keyid-format 0xlong —with-fingerprint —verify tails-amd64-3.1.iso.sig tails-amd64-3.1.iso\` provides the fingerprints as shown on the Tails site…so maybe the provided command should be amended.
Regarding timezone, the documentation should possibly state something
like: “The date of the signature should be the same, but will be
displayed in your local timezone.”
I don’t understand why the “using RSA key…” differs. There is obviously
a relationship between the quoted value and the actual output - both
contain “AF292B44A0EDAA41”. I have tried different combinations of
\`—keyid-format\` options, but can’t get a match

The current documentation is found in the `feature/5688-tails-server`
branch in `wiki/src/doc/tails_server/`. There is currently a short
documentation of the usage of Tails Server in general, how to connect to
Tails Server, and how to use the Mumble service. Those should be
proofread and improved. Additionally, we (probably?) should also write
documentation for the usage of the other available services (Gobby,
XMPP, SFTP, lighttpd).

In the documentation to download and verify the ISO with GnuPG
(<http://tails.boum.org/install/download/openpgp)>, it is said that
> If you are doing the verification for the first time, download the
Tails signing key and import it in your keyring. If you are working from
Tails, the signing key is already included.
If a user have downloaded the signing key a long time ago, or uses an
old Tails release, it may not be up to date, and therefore the
verification ends up with a “this key is expired” error. A lot of users
keep using this method to verify the ISO and send us bug reports or
emails, worried about our signing key not being valid anymore.
I think I’ll add an entry to the FAQ about this, but I doubt it will
avoid all these users from sending bug reports… If the documentation
suggested the users to update the signing key before verifying the ISO,
it would solve the issue.

We want to have a good backup system for persistent data (tails/tails#5301). Some
progress has been made on this front since 1.5 years, but it’s unclear
when we can actually implement it. Meanwhile, how about we spend the
smallest possible amount of time documenting how to do such backups by
hand? I’ve been requested that several times recently, and so far
neither users requesting it nor I had realized that… most of the work is
already done in `wiki/src/doc/first_steps/persistence/copy.mdwn` :)
So it seems that a low-hanging fruit, with a pretty good cost/benefit
ratio, is waiting to be picked: we could expand a little bit the scope
of that page existing page, just enough to satisfy this additional use
case (that I can specify more clearly if needed), and then link it from
`wiki/src/doc/first_steps/persistence.mdwn` in a way that makes users
aware of it.
What do you think?
